Akela's story doesn't start with her parents meeting. No, it starts before that - a long time ago in the past. Aolani was a great woman. Being a daughter of Prometheus he was viewed by the townspeople as being different, heroic and of another species. Aolani did a lot for the gods - defended sacraments and favourite children whenever she could as well as worshipping every god and acting like their demigod messenger at times. Those acts led to the gift of the Greek fire. You see, Prometheus was rather proud that his daughter had gained the power to manipulate Greek fire and as a result, she made it so any descendant of Aolani born to a fire god would also possess such an ability with the price of losing any regular powers they would've inherited. Truly, that's where Akela's story begins.
A multitude of generations down the line and Sapphira Calina, a rare mortal child of the Aolani lineage, met Hephaestus on the beach in Honolulu. Granted the latter wasn't much of the looker, Sapphira felt a power aura coming from him and due to her father being a demigod himself and being raised to understand what a presence of a god felt like, Sapphira bedded him quickly - unaware of the child she'd conceived. Nine months later on 18th January 1997, a girl was born. Naming her Akela, Sapphira had fulfilled her lineage's destiny of each of it's members and as such, she began to care for her daughter.
Growing up, Akela lived a normal life - as normal as it gets for a demigod who belongs to a special lineage. Despite this, the Gods never seemed to detect her abnormality, with most assuming she was an average daughter of Hephaestus. Sapphira married pretty quickly to a man by the names of Kai Kalili and she and her daughter took on his name, throwing any Gods on Akela's trail even more off track. Sapphira's father often aided in the upbringing of Akela and he knew of the lineage's secret and as such he told his daughter to be weary of the girl. Despite this, Sapphira found it pathetic to be scared of her own daughter and didn't heed warnings when she placed a small vile of Greek fire on the mantelpiece in the living room. Sapphira, going against her father's advice, enrolled Akela in public school in hopes that her daughter would lead a normal life.
Up until the age of 13, Akela's life was normal. She showed no abnormalities and was blossoming into a beautiful young teenager. She received average grades in school, yet she excelled in construction classes. When she was 13, however, an attack came in the form of a harpy. It was convenient for Akela that her grandfather was alongside her, teaching her how to use Greek Fire as he was able to guide her into her first use of the substance. It all happened rather quickly - one moment the harpy was flying towards her, an the next there was a flash of green and some gold sand was in the monster's place. That moment changed something in Akela. She never knew how powerful she was and her grandfather's repeated words of 'So powerful. The lineage lives on,' didn't help. She began to close up and feared for the worst. For the next five years she continued to live in solitude, venturing out when only necessary and always being accompanied by her grandfather or a demigod relative so she wouldn't have to fight her own battles.
With 2015 dawning, the Kalili's had a lot going for them; Akela turned 18, Sapphira and Kai had two sons (Pika and Luka), Kai had received a promotion that had the possibility of relocation to Los Angeles, and Sapphira inherited a large sum of money. That all stopped when Akela lost control of her Greek fire and set their house on fire, killing her family. Since that tragedy in February, Akela's been travelling to get to Camp, however obstacles stand in her way...
