Oh Siyeon was in her early 20s when she’d given birth to her first son, Oh Min’gyu, and she certainly didn't want to have a second child almost a year later. Especially since she was struggling to stay afloat with her first child. Not to mention, in her line of work, she wouldn't know who this child's father was. For 9 months she pondered this until she gave birth to the child, who she named Oh Minjun, and then immediately, after, told the doctors she didn't want to see the child and to give him up for adoption. People would say that this was cruel the way she treated him, but she wanted to give the child the life he deserved. Siyeon couldn't and wouldn't give up her other son Min’gyu, as she knew he was a demigod and she needed to get him to Camp Half blood eventually, whether she liked it or not.
Ryland spent the first 5 years of his life in an orphanage in South Korea, until he was adopted by a french couple, named Jessamine and Philip. They seemed nice on the outside, but they had made Ryland change his name, from Oh Minjun, and conform to western society, which he didn’t do willingly. As the boy had spent his first 5 years of life within an eastern society everything he knew, from traditions to customs, was what he wanted to stick. Even if it meant no one could understand him, especially his ‘parents’. He rather liked not talking to the stuck up french family he’d been adopted into.
As he got older, around the age of 7, Ryland started having dreams of a boy, ones that were extremely vivid. He thought it was just his unconscious mind coming up with something to dream about, but it was really Morpheus sending him dreams of his older brother, Min’gyu. Morpheus had sent the boy these dreams after watching him for some time, as he wanted to show the young boy, who he had taken a liking to, that his real family wasn’t that great, and that his adoptive family was what he needed. even if the boys brother was his son. The dreams were of what Min’gyu had been doing that day or what he was currently doing, since Rylands time zone was further ahead. So he was tuning into Min’gyus life unconsciously, he saw the good and the bad. These things actually affected the boy emotionally, as the dreams where nearly every night. After a few months the boy started writing stories of the boy referring to him as ‘intruder’ since he was intruding in on his dreams. He kept this up until he was 11 years old, when he intruded upon something he had never wanted to see.
The boy, now 8 years old, had been sent to a boarding school in northern France, where he was forced, at this point, to speak French. Ryland had always thought of the western languages a little disgusting. As he had learned in his history class that the French, Spanish, and English had conquered the Americas and forced the natives into either slavery or murdered them for their land. The thought of murdering someone for something that could've been shared sickened him, and now he thought many of the European people as cruel and ruthless. Sure, Korean people had done it, but they didn’t wipe out whole groups of native people just for some land. The way Europeans acted, in his opinion, was disgusting. He started to detest the people around him more and more each day. Ryland started to act out towards other people, especially when someone tried talking to him, as he didn’t want to speak the people he viewed as tainted. This eventually led the boy to being bullied by his peers, and even getting into fights when things would get physical.
A couple years later, age 11, and he fell asleep a little early as he had, had a bad headache for most of the day. 20 minutes into his sleep an image of ‘intruder’ popped up until it cleared up until he made out an older man that had started getting closer to the boy, even though he had told him to stay away. The man obviously didn’t listen, and continued to come closer and then started touching the boy inappropriately causing him to scream and cry. Then a woman entered the picture, she looked a little like the boy in the dream, as intruder was curled in a ball on the ground crying. The older man spoke hastily and then left, telling a lie to save himself. Then the woman started yelling which pulled him back to consciousness, tears streaking his cheeks, though it wasn’t himself that had pulled him out, it it was Hypnos.
Hypnos had been watching what Morpheus had been doing to the boy, and at this point it crossed a line, or at least he thought so anyways. What happened to Min’gyu should've been kept to himself and whomever he decided to tell, as even the god of dreams knew boundaries. After that point he sent the boy dreams of things that would settle his restless mind, and hopefully erase the memories of what had been seen that night. The dreaming of ‘intruder’ stopped for 4 years, until the strings where again pulled.
A couple years later, age 12, the boy started seeing weird creatures roaming around, woman with the bodies of birds, and gigantic dogs. Those things didn’t exist right? They couldn’t exist so he pressed these things out of his mind, until he had a research project for his history class. The project was on the Greek gods and goddesses, and each person had to choose one to write about, and Ryland choose Hypnos as the name seemed to pop out to him, plus, he thought, the god of dreams was kind of cool. As he researched he came across photos of harpies and hellhounds, creatures he recognized immediately from the time he spent away from his studies. At this point he thought he was going crazy, but, as he did a little research, he came across myths of Priests who had supposedly seen these kind of creatures.
He had to be going crazy to even agree that these things could be real, and then decided to ask the teacher who’d given the assignment about these creatures even dropping little hints that they could be real. Which the teacher didn’t deny, as he was a clear sighted mortal, who had a demigod child, now at Camp Half blood. He also didn’t say they were real, but upon hearing that the boy was seeing these creatures made him want to contact his son, and get him ‘help’. Though he wasn’t sure the boy was even a demigod, as he knew that the creatures would start attacking him soon, so he decided to wait a while before taking action.
As the project progressed, he came to think of Hypnos’ as a gentle god, one that allowed endless dreaming and even forgetfulness. He started praying to the god hoping someone would hear his prayers, and dreams, even if others thought he wasn’t real. The god was real enough for him. His dream to go back to Korea and even the one to meet his real family. The god heard his prayers and decided to set something up, something that would get him away from the family he thought he hated. Since Ryland was clear sighted and Hypnos was in need of a new priest for his cabin, the boy could go to camp half-blood, but only if he agreed to be his cabin priest. So, he started to pull the strings from the sidelines, causing certain events to ‘coincidentally’ happen.
2 years later, age 15, and the gods plan was put into motion, Rylands father, a French literature professor, was offered a job at the university of New York, where he’d also be head of his department. The job had practically fallen into his lap, as he’d been working at a community college not a nice university. He immediately packed his family, and moved them to America, obviously accepting the job. Upon arriving in New York he started to see more of the creatures he’d seen back in France. What was the saying? What happens in the old country stays in the old country, or something like that. Was he truly going crazy? At this point he decided not to test this, and to not tell anyone, and instead he started journaling again, but it was in his native tongue of Korean, as he didn’t want his parents to get nosy and read his stuff. He wrote about this creatures in great description, and even the occasion of seeing someone being chased. He couldn’t do anything about it or he’d be seen as crazy, since other people couldn’t see the creatures.
As he went to bed that night he saw ‘Intruder’ again, it had been 4 years since he’d had a dream of this boy; Still unaware that it was his older brother. This time it was completely different from the usual, but not worse than the dream he had 4 years prior. The scene was completely different and the boy looked so much older than when he had last visited his dreams, and he was fighting a creature, one the boy had seen before. There was also another boy with him, was this boy also part of his overactive imagination? As the scene progressed the monster was defeated, and both boys came out okay, then the scene shifted again, and this time there were 3 boys talking about the gods; Greek gods to be exact. This was a little unsettling, but they continued to talk about different things that concerned demigods. As the scene progressed, ‘Intruder’ and the boy sitting closest to him seem alarmed, as if what was being said was completely true. A few seconds later and the boy woke up, hitting his forehead, hard, on his loft bed. He couldn’t imagine why he’d have this kind of dream after so many years, something was wrong.
The following day he started going to books on mythology, and found a story within it that seemed to pop out to him, as it was a story of the god Hypnos, his favorite god. He read through it and eventually decided on doing something, as to make sure he hadn’t been praying to emptiness.
“If you’re real show me a sign”
A few seconds later and he was immediately pulled into sleepiness, which was odd, because a few moments before he’d been wide awake. Now he was sure that he was real, and he felt insanely embarrassed that someone had been watching him. He started questioning the dreams he’d had over the years, and now he didn’t know what to do, as he started questioning if he’d been tuning into another person's life, which in his eyes wasn’t right. He continued to pondered this until the sleepiness over took his consciousness.
A year had passed since then and,the boy was now 16 years old, he’d spent the last year devoting himself to the god of Sleep, Hypnos. At this point he didn’t care if he came off as weird, as he knew one thing in his life was real, so he had pursued the path of that god. He prayed to the god when he had the chance, but not overly so, as he thought that’d be weird as all Hades. On one particular day he’d prayed to Hypnos for a sign that he was still in favor of him. When he prayed to the god he received the sign in the form of a running boy followed by a hellhound, he didn’t know what was going on, but he intervened and led the boy down a dead end, oops. They thought they were both going to die, but then the sound of metal cutting thru flesh could be heard as the creature turned into a pile of dust.
A girl brandishing a sword could be seen, covered in a little bit of dust, as she gave Ryland a once over; Immediately noticing that the boy was a mortal, and not a demigod, but what was weirder was how he knew to save the boy. He explained that he was praying to Hypnos when the boy had ran passed followed by the hellhound. The girl tilted her head, and knew that Ryland must of been a priest chosen by the god. She asked the boy if he would like to camp to a special camp for demigods, and even though he wasn’t one, that he too was special, because he’d been chosen by Hypnos himself. Which was an oddity since Hypnos hadn’t had a priest in a very long time. He shrugged and agreed not really caring much for his ‘parents’, they probably wouldn’t even notice he was gone, as he assumed they were probably engrossed in their work again. They went to camp by car, as the demigod was old enough to drive, and a few hours later they arrived at camp. Him being placed within the Hypnos cabin, as its priest.
